Dr. Lawson received his Ph.D. in Statistics in 1984 at the Polytechnic Institute in New York. He recieved two M.S. Degrees in Statistics, one at Rutgers University in 1978, and the other at Brigham Young University in 1971. His B.S. was in Statistics in 1969. Dr. Lawson has taught here at BYU since 1986. He most often teaches Stat 361-Quality Improvement for Industry, Stat 466 - Introduction to Reliability, and Stat 631 - Advanced Experiemental Design.

Prior to returning to BYU, Dr. Lawson had fifteen years of experience in consulting and industry. He worked as a Senior Biostatistician at Johnson & Johnson from 1971-1976. He was the manager of Corporation Statistics Group and the internal consultants for the FMC Corporation in Princeton, New Jersey from 1976-1986. He continues to consult through the Center for Statistical Research, and for several corporations.

Dr. Lawson is the Faculty Advisor for the B.Y.U Student Section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and he is the Advisor for the Quality Science emphasis undergraduate majors.
